Morena, from the Desk of Mike...
During the lockdown my local barber, Barry, had to close his shop and so I asked my wife Sally if she would have a go at making me look somewhat respectable. With scissors, clippers and an air of apparent confidence, she pruned my mop. Sitting in the midst of my fallen locks, I looked in the mirror and declared the mission a success until Sally responded with the words no one in a barber’s chair wants to hear “Mmmmm….. you haven’t seen the back”
This struck a chord with me. We have this propensity to pretend that all is well when often we are dying inside, yes, the hair might look good at the front …… but you haven’t seen the back!
I believe that as part of a community, bound together by our God, we have a tremendous privilege to be more honest with each other, more vulnerable, more open to the offer of support, of prayer, of a shoulder. And of course, the responsibility therefore to be the listener, the supporter, that prayer warrior and the shoulder when we are needed.
I then reflected on our God who knows us intimately
Psalm 139 says ….
You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Thank you, my God, for your unfailing love, despite how our hair might be looking at the back.
